Computer education in the University of the Sacred Heart
The University of the Sacred Heart was established in April 1948, replacing the former Sacred Heart Senmon Gakko. It is one of the first women's universities to be established in Japan after World War II under the new educational system. In the Faculty of Liberal Arts (which offers Bachelor of Arts degrees), there are five Departments: Foreign Languages and Literature, Japanese Language and Literature, History and Social Sciences, Philosophy, and Education. We have the University of the Sacred Heart network (USHnet) at present, through which professors and students can connect Internet. Of course they enjoy E-mail, too. There are over 450 computers in Media center, Learning support center, Computer rooms of psychology and International communications, and so on. Students are expected to acquire information processing skills in some of the major courses in the social, scientific, and interdisciplinary fields. A number of the latest model computers are provided for student use in order to assure computer literacy and an educational environment which corresponds to the present information-oriented age. In every training session in information processing and computer programming, students are able to turn to their tutors for guidance at any time until they acquire basic skills.
