Abstract:
A Multimedia educational environment of Toho University
Toho University Narashino Campus (Funabashi, Chiba) has drastically improved its computer and multimedia environment. Two facilities, Multimedia Studio and Multimedia Lounge, started their use last autumn, and the previously used PC classroom, now called Multimedia Laboratory, has changed its mission to more computer-oriented instruction such as programming.
@The Studio, aimed at classes that utilize multimedia presentations for class instruction, is devised with three large projectors, cameras and digital video equipments. These equipments are controlled at the master console during the classes. Sixty seats are equipped with notebook computers underneath the desk top for computer-based instruction.
@The Lounge provides an environment for daily mail and Web lookup, together with self-study, paper and report preparation and presentation preparation. Its SunRay1 terminals and round tables were designed to provide a lounge-like atmosphere for conversation and discussion. The SunRay1-based system with Citrix Metaframe allows both UNIX and WindowsNT windows in a very natural way so that the average novice users can enjoy WindowsNT and MS Office applications without special introduction. These two new rooms share the user authentication IDs and files so that students can move around to work on their projects.
@The Laboratory, the former PC classroom, will now be used for instruction with more computer-oriented works such as programming. These three facilities with different objectives are intended to work together for a better instruction and self-study environment.
